Even today dyslexia or a specific learning disability is not something everyone, especially educationists, policy makers and teachers all over India are well aware of.Many children get branded as being "dull", "lazy", "disobedient", "obstinate" and this is because parents as well as teachers are not aware that these children have a lesser-known condition.

It is a condition that can be helped if identified early and given the right kind of help. The potential of these children could go untapped and they could be sidelined in schools and may ultimately lose interest in studies and may even become a school dropout.Bringing about an awareness of what this condition is about, how to identify and what to do after identification are all very important to the future of the child.

An early identification of the child can even help the children "at risk" of having a full-blown disability later.

It is important that
  • the general public as well as educationists get to know what the problem is
  • the awareness should be made at the vernacular level so that everyone is able to understand.
Dyslexia is not an elitist problem it is a language disorder and therefore manifests in the processing of any language. So it can show up in any of the Indian languages as well.
What does MDA do in this area?
  • We offer our services to do awareness talks in any public platform, social clubs, and school gatherings.
  • We also do awareness workshops for a longer duration 2-3 hours covering the various aspects of identification.
  • We give programmes on radio and television about this condition.
  • We have given write-ups in English and Tamil dailies as well as English and Tamil Magazines about dyslexia.
